Unveiling Holding the Fire Artwork by Helen Yanez for the 2026 Women of Color Symposium

The 2026 Women of Color Symposium is set to be a powerful gathering, and this year, it features a unique artistic element that embodies the event’s spirit. Local artist Helen Yanez has created a custom piece that captures the essence of intergenerational strength, resilience, and leadership among Women of Color.

A special thank you to the City of San Luis Obispo and the Cultural Arts & Community Promotions (CACP) grant for making this collaboration possible.

The Meaning Behind Holding the Fire Artwork

Helen Yanez’s artwork centers on three Women of Color, each representing a different generation and cultural background. They stand in strong, grounded poses, holding a glowing purple flame. This flame is not just a visual element; it carries deep symbolism.

Helen describes this piece as: "This visual concept centers three Women of Color, each representing a distinct generation and cultural lineage, standing in powerful, grounded stances while holding a luminescent purple flame."The flame symbolizes intergenerational leadership, ancestral memory, and collective resilience. It is not destructive fire, it is sacred fire. It is a memory. It is prayer. It is a continuation."

About Helen

I am an artist and illustrator from Santa Barbara County, rooted in the rich cultural heritage of my Purépecha ancestry. My work is created with intention and deep purpose: to illustrate the lived realities of my brown, Indigenous, migrant community.

Through bold imagery and storytelling, I strive to reflect the beauty, complexity, and strength of my people. My art is both a mirror and a bridge, offering my community the opportunity to feel seen, represented, and celebrated, while also educating those outside our reality.

As an artist with Purépecha roots, I carry immense pride in keeping our traditions, struggles, and spirit alive through every piece I create. Art, for me, is not only a form of personal expression, but a tool for cultural preservation, resistance, and collective healing.
