News and Events: Fall 2019
October 3, 2019
Fanshen Cox, award-winning playwright, actor, producer, and educator, was the featured speaker for our Fall Community Outreach meeting on Thurs., Oct.3. As Head of Strategic Outreach at Pearl Street Films, owned by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, Fanshen works to achieve inclusive representation in the entertainment industry, and co-authored the Inclusion Rider (referred to by Frances McDormand in her 2018 Oscar acceptance speech). At our meeting, she spoke about the origins of the national census, weaving in the theme of racial identity and the absurdity of having to check a box to define who you are. She had just performed her one-woman play, One Drop of Love, for our high school seniors, and entertained us with characters from her play as she shared her insights. The evening was at once inspirational and insightful.

On Sunday November 10th, we hosted a table of 10 local educators at the annual Human Rights Watch fundraiser dinner, held in Santa Barbara. The evening highlights the work that Human Rights Watch does world-wide, and serves as an inspiration to the teachers in attendance to continue to create units that educate our youth about current and historical events with human rights as a theme.
