ABOUT THE EVENT
Join us for a guided tour of the first Arab American oral history installation in San Luis Obispo, “Mawtini: Arab American Narratives of Home and Belonging”. The event will be followed by a lovely meal of traditional Arab foods provided by a local restaurant. For those who observe, all dishes are halal.
Mawtini is a project funded by a City of SLO DEI grant, administered by the Peace Academy of Sciences and Arts, Our Roots/Our Routes and community partners. The installation includes audio and visual experiences featuring oral histories of 14 of our Arab American neighbors.
On March 18, attendees will enjoy a special tour of the exhibit, followed by an iftar in observance of Ramadan, when Muslims fast from dawn to sunset.
At sunset, dates and water will be shared, followed by a brief prayer, which non-Muslims are welcome to observe. Afterward, all guests are invited to share a meal together. The iftar is a cherished cultural and spiritual tradition that fosters community and care, recognized by UNESCO in 2023 as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
